Skiing: Austria's Goergl wins giant slalom; Vonn 13th

MARIBOR, Slovenia — Elisabeth Goergl of Austria won a World Cup giant slalom today for her first career victory, while Lindsey Vonn the United States was 13th.

Goergl, who led after the first leg, finished in a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 38.49 seconds.

Manuela Moelgg of Italy took second, 0.49 seconds behind, and Denise Karbon of Italy finished third. Karbon was attempting to match Anja Paerson's record of five straight World Cup giant slalom wins.

Overall World Cup leader Nicole Hosp of Austria was sixth.

Goergl had a near-flawless first run on the Mariborski course and posted the fifth best time in the second leg.

"Since my first podium finish in Bormio back in 2003, I have been dreaming about winning," Goergl said. "This is so great, it was worthwhile waiting for."

Karbon had a good second run to climb from sixth to third.

"I am happy with this result. I had a consistent second run, so that was OK for me," Karbon said. "I am not disappointed at all about missing out on that record. I knew it was going to be hard for me to win here as I don't like this rather flat slope."

Goergl is Karbon's main challenger in the discipline standings.

Karbon has 460 points and Goergl 319, with three more giant slaloms scheduled this season.

"Denise skies very good, but she is not unbeatable," Goergl. "So we have some interesting races coming up and let's see who comes out on top at the end."
