Roosevelt turns back Moanalua in OIA Red East

By Stanley Lee
Advertiser Staff Writer

Tasia Kamakawiwo'ole scored 13 points and Dianna Zane added 10 as the Roosevelt High School girls basketball team defeated Moanalua, 46-36, last night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East game.

The Rough Riders (6-2), No. 10 in The Advertiser's statewide poll of coaches and media, got off to a big start and led 25-11 at halftime before holding off a late Na Menehune (5-3) rally.

"We had a good rhythm starting from the beginning and that helped us out the rest of the game," said Zane, who scored five of the game's first seven points.

Roosevelt led 15-5 early in the second quarter after back-to-back baskets by Mikela Thoemmes.

Six straight points by Moanalua cut the deficit to 15-11 with less than four minutes remaining, but Roosevelt, pushing the tempo, scored 10 straight to close out the second quarter. The Rough Riders converted three steals into six points during the run.

Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini credited Zane for her ball handling and running the team's offense in the first half.

"She can go off for 20 (points), but she pushes the ball, pulls the defenses up and finds people open," Keanini said. "She's a work horse for us and makes everything work for us."

Down by as much as 17 in the third quarter, Moanalua cut into the deficit with a frantic defense in the fourth.

After a Roosevelt turnover, Moanalua's Britni Ronolo made a free throw to cut the deficit to 43-33 with 1:57 remaining.

A free throw by Moanalua's Michelle Hardy made it 43-34 with 1:31 left and Na Menehune got the ball back after Roosevelt lost it at midcourt.

But Janelle Uncangco missed a 3-point attempt and Zane grabbed the rebound.

"They have a lot of pride," Moanalua coach Kristie Morikawa said. "When they start getting run over, hearing it from us, that sense of pride kicks in. It always happens in big games like this, they always come back and put up a fight."

Keanini said he had different players handle the ball late in the game, but in normal situations, the ball would go into Zane's hands.

"We didn't handle it (Moanalua's defense) very well," Keanini said. "We've played so many zone teams that the pressure team was a surprise to us. They did an outstanding job of denying."

Ronolo, a 5-foot-8 undersized post player, finished with 17 points, battling in the post with Kamakawiwo'ole and Thoemmes the entire game. A.J. Verdida added 10 for Moanalua.

"You don't stop a player like Britni," Keanini said. "We tried to keep her off the glass mostly, but you really can't stop her from scoring on the block."

Kamakawiwo'ole said it was difficult going up against Ronolo.

"She's a tough girl," Kamakawiwo'ole said. "The only thing that was in my head was making the shots. I tried to do some moves that would draw fouls."
