Jags cut ex-UH star Owens

The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed receiver Charles Sharon to the active roster yesterday and waived receiver Chad Owens.

Owens, a Roosevelt High and UH alum, was signed to the practice squad Nov. 8 and moved to the active roster Dec. 28. He played in the regular-season finale at Houston, but misplayed a punt.

LAM OUT IN QUARTERS

Hawai'i's Chris Lam fell in the quarterfinals of the $10,000 Westgate Printing Futures yesterday in Wesley Chapel, Fla. American Gregory Ouellette defeated Lam, 6-3, 6-4.

Lam was down 1-4 in the second set, rallied to tie at 4-4, but lost his next service game. He will next play in the $10,000 Extreme Tennis Academy Futures, at North Miami Beach. Lam is seeded sixth in singles and will play doubles with American Chris Wettengel.

HPU MEN TOP UH-HILO

Jason Curtis scored 21 points and Justonn Smith added 20 as Hawai'i Pacific (1-3, 4-9) beat UH-Hilo (1-1, 5-4), 77-74, last night in a men's Pacific West Conference basketball game at the Neal Blaisdell Center.

UH-HILO WOMEN WIN

Sheila Azevedo scored 22 points and Ashley Kualii added 18 to lead UH-Hilo (2-0, 2-7) to a 94-90 win over Hawai'i Pacific (1-3, 1-12) last night in a women's Pacific West Conference basketball game at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
