Ex-Maryknoll assistant coach charged with sex assault

Advertiser Staff

A former private high school assistant volleyball coach was charged last night with sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.

Darin Hideki Yoshinaka, 28, of an Alexander Street address was charged at 11:30 p.m. with two counts of first-degree sex assault and five counts of third-degree sex assault. He posted $50,000 bail and was released today at 12:55 a.m.

The alleged assaults occurred during a two-month period from last Nov. 3 through Jan. 2 while Yoshinaka was coaching at Maryknoll High School. He was not a member of the school's faculty and is no longer coaching at Maryknoll.

Yoshinaka has an initial appearance scheduled Wednesday at District Court.

In 2006, Yoshinaka was an assistant volleyball coach at Sacred Heart Academy. He coached the team to a Division II league championship while head coach Jonathan Tom was away on a business trip.
