Preps: Molokai girls rebound against Seabury Hall

OLINDA, Maui — The Moloka'i girls basketball team made sure its second game against Seabury Hall in two days ended differently than the first.

The visiting Farmers beat the Spartans 31-17 last night at Erdman Athletic Center in a showdown of the Maui Interscholastic League's top Division II teams, a day after suffering their first loss of the season, 46-42 in overtime.

"We focused on the same thing as last (Friday) night,'' said Moloka'i coach Doug Furlong said to The Maui News. "We should've come away with two this weekend.''

The Farmers (5-1) led from the start, with point guard Danna-Lynn Hooper scoring off the tipoff before hitting a jumper on Moloka'i's next possession.

The Farmers' defense, meanwhile, forced turnovers on the Spartans' first two possessions.

"We had a hard practice today and then coach really woke us up to what we were really capable of doing, so we tried to push 10 times harder because we knew we were really supposed to take last night's game,'' said Hooper, who finished with 12 points. "We wanted to work extra hard.''

Seabury Hall (3-1), already short-handed because of injuries, was forced to pull Leslie Smith after two fouls in the first quarter.

"It was the game that we thought it was going to be from Moloka'i,'' said Spartans coach Philip Tongg. "They really haven't shown us anything different and they came to play tonight. They brought it.''

The Farmers scored 12 of the game's first 14 points, the last two on a Hooper layup to end the first quarter.

The Spartans opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run, but went scoreless in the third quarter.

"We tried to find different ways to adjust (to them) and run different plays so if we got stuck on one, we have something else to go to,'' Hooper said. "It was important (to get a big lead) because we wanted to be comfortable where we were.''

Kalei Adolpho had six points for Molokai and Amber Sterner had four.

Yacine Meyer scored 12 points for the Spartans.

"We've got a few individuals who consistently play well, but we're focusing on developing as a team,'' Furlong said.

The teams could meet again in the MIL Division II tournament.

"All I know is we're going to have to play as many as three more times before it's done and they took this one, they took this one,'' Tongg said. "Hopefully, the next time we play them, we should have everybody back. The girls tonight played as hard as they could.

"I'll tell you, Moloka'i is good and I'll be the first to say that. I'm not taking anything away from them at all – they played a hard game.''
