The Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball title suddenly is back up for grabs, after 'Iolani stunned visiting Punahou 48-35 last night before a home crowd of about 550.

The Raiders, ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 5-1 in the ILH, while No. 1 Buffanblu fell to 6-1.

Punahou had won the first-round meeting on Jan. 3, 48-38, but senior Jamie Smith scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds last night and got strong support from several teammates.

"It's a great feeling, but we still have to play Kamehameha again and Punahou again and Mid-Pacific twice," said Smith, a 6-foot center. "It's not over yet, so we don't want to get too high or too low."

An even keel helped 'Iolani rally from a 10-4 deficit after the first period and a 14-6 hole early in the second. Dayna Jandoc scored on a layup, Smith made a three-point play and Tami Konishi drained a 3-pointer to tie it at 14-14 midway through the quarter.

It was still tied at 23-23 early in the third before Smith's layup started an 11-0 run in which four different Raiders scored.

An 8-foot bank shot by freshman reserve Hailey Maeda with 51 seconds remaining gave 'Iolani a 38-25 lead heading into the fourth.

"Last time, it was mostly just Jamie Smith-Jamie Smith-Jamie Smith (27 points)," Buffanblu coach Mike Taylor said. "This time their role players played with confidence. All of their girls came in ready to play."

The Raiders shut out Punahou for almost seven minutes in the fourth period and built the lead to 44-28.

Noticeably missing again from the Buffanblu lineup was junior point guard Janelle Nomura, who suffered a right ankle injury last month and is not expected back for at least another week.

"She's a big part of their team," 'Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "Without her, their rotation is one guard short."

Shawna-Lei Kuehu led Punahou with 21 points, five rebounds and three blocks.

Jandoc added eight points for the Raiders, who also received five points off the bench from freshman Lahela usui during the key third-period run.

"I'm really proud of the freshmen, Hailey really stepped up with that putback," Smith said. "(The support) definitely contributed to the win."
