UH rallies past San Jose St., 65-64, in men's basketball

Matt Gibson slashed in for a driving layup with 11 seconds left, lifting the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team to a 65-64 victory over San Jose State tonight at Stan Sheriff Center.

The victory gave UH a 6-10 overall record, 2-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. San Jose State is 8-8 and 1-3.

San Jose State led UH by as many as 11 points but the Rainbow Warriors rallied in the end.

UH took its first lead of the half with 3:38 left on a Bobby Nash 3-pointer for a 56-54 lead.

The lead would change hands seven more times the rest of the way.

Bill Amis' putback and free throw gave up a 61-60 lead with 1:38 left. After San Jose State recaptured the lead, Amis hit a 15-footer for a 63-62 UH lead,

DaShawn Wright hit a jumper with 39.7 seconds to play for a 64-63 San Jose State lead, setting up UH's final play.

UH plays its next game Saturday against Fresno State.
