University of Hawai'i defensive coordinator Greg McMackin is set to interview for the UH head coaching job tomorrow, according to sources familiar with the situation.

George Lumpkin, UH's associate head coach the past nine years, also will be interviewed.

Tomorrow is the first day in which UH can review applicants. UH was required to post the opening for the position for five days. It was posted on the UH site last Tuesday.

McMackin appears to be the overwhelming choice to replace June Jones, who signed to become coach at Southern Methodist last Monday.

McMackin received endorsements from Jones, UH assistant coaches and players.

Even Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw said the new coach "must be someone who can lead a smooth transition for current team members."

UH President David McClain said he hopes to have a coach in place this week so the university can host football recruits by this weekend.

Norm Chow, offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, did not apply for the vacant head coaching job.

It is not known if Kevin Gilbride, offensive coordinator for the New York Giants, applied. Gilbride's brother-in-law, Mike Cavanaugh, a former UH coach, said Gilbride was very interested.

But the Giants upset the Dallas Cowboys yesterday and are still playing.
