Power strip malfunction started Hauula fire

Advertiser Staff

A malfunction in an electrical power strip started Friday's fire at 54-012 Ahinalu Place in Hau'ula, according to the Honolulu Fire Department.

HFD spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said today a microwave oven and chest freezer were plugged into the power strip, which itself was plugged into an extension cord.

No one was home when the fire started and the house is not equipped with smoke detectors, Seelig added.

Damage is estimated at $50,000 to the structure and $15, 000 to contents.
