Church picks Nakata as for peacemaker award

The Church of the Crossroads has chosen the Rev. Robert Nakata as this year's recipient of its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Peacemaker Award.

Nakata, a former state lawmaker, is pastor of Kahalu'u United Methodist Church.

Nakata's work on environmental, Native Hawaiian and social justice issues, including homelessness and affordable rental housing, were cited. He is also the incoming President of Faith Action for Community Equity.

The awards ceremony will be held 7 p.m. Monday at the church, 1212 University Ave.
