NBA: Lakers say center Bynum will miss 8 weeks

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum, a major factor in the team's surprising start, will miss at least eight weeks with a knee injury, the team announced today.

With the Lakers in Seattle for today's game, Bynum stayed behind to undergo an MRI, which showed he had suffered a subluxation of his left kneecap.

Lakers physician Steve Lombardo said Bynum would not need surgery and would begin rehabilitation immediately.

Bynum, 20, was injured early in the third quarter of Sunday night's 100-99 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. Subluxation occurs when the kneecap is pulled toward the outside of the knee.

Bynum is averaging 13.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, and his improved play is a major reason for the Lakers' 25-11 record.
