Pedestrian, 79, hit while rushing to catch bus in Kalihi

Advertiser Staff

A 79-year-old man was rushing to catch the bus this morning when he was hit in a marked crosswalk on North School Street and critically injured.

The accident happened about 6:25 a.m. at the intersection with Ahonui Street, in front of the Kokua Kalihi Valley community center.

Police said the pedestrian darted into the crosswalk to catch a bus in front of the community center when he was hit by a 1993 Honda sedan in the left east-bound lane. The victim was taken to The Queen's Medical Center. The driver of the vehicle, a 41-year-old man, was not injured.

Police said it was dark and cloudy when the crash happened. The crosswalk did not have a traffic signal. Speed and alcohol were not apparent factors, police said.
