U.S. Rep. Abercrombie's Web site wins award

WASHINGTON — Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawai'i, won a second place award for the quality of his congressional Web site, the Congressional Management Foundation announced today.

Abercrombie said his office set out to build a Web site that would expand the public's access to his office, offering news, useful information and online access to federal and congressional services.

"Because the Web site is also a window into Hawai'i and our community for people on the Mainland, we wanted a site that truly reflects the beauty, the diversity and the interests of our home," Abercrombie said.

Abercrombie's award was among 104 the foundation selected from an analysis of 618 congressional Web sites, including those of all Senate and House members, committees and leadership offices.

The foundation's report said the overall quality of congressional Web sites continues to be disappointing with more than 40 percent earning a substandard or failing grade.

The foundation studies how congressional members can use the Internet to improve communications and promote participation in the legislative process.

"One of the key reasons for the awards is to highlight best practices so offices can improve their sites by learning from those doing a good job," said Beverly Bell, executive director of the foundation. "Representative Abercrombie's Web site shows that he understands the value of creating a virtual office to reach specific audiences who have come to expect having their needs met online."
