HANAUMA CLEANUP — The Friends of Hanauma Bay needs volunteers 8:30-11 a.m. Jan. 13 to clean up the beach, park and highway from Keahole Street to the Blow Hole. Meet at upper picnic area next to visitor center. For information, call Harvey Shapiro at 395-1217.

POUHALA MARSH RESTORATION — The Hawai'i Nature Center is restoring Pouhala Marsh, the largest remaining wetland in Pearl Harbor. Volunteers are needed to pull pickleweed and mangrove 8:30-11:30 a.m. Jan. 19. Bring work gloves, water, hat, sunscreen, towel and change of clothes; covered footwear and long pants required. CRATER OVERNIGHTER — The Friends of Haleakala National Park will conduct cabin maintenance, invasive species removal or other work during service trips Jan. 19-21 and Feb. 16-18 to Kapalaoa Cabin. Before signing up, go to www.fhnp.org, create an account, and log into the account to learn more and certify your readiness for service trips. MAKIKI WAI HELPERS — The O'ahu Na Ala Hele Trails and Access program and the Hawai'i Nature Center need volunteers 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Jan. 26 and Feb. 23 to weed, pick up branches, plant, water and fertilize native plants as part of the Makiki WAI (Watershed Awareness Initiative) forest restoration project. Bring long pants, long-sleeved shirt, shoes or boots, gloves, insect repellent, water and lunch. Meet at the Makiki Forestry Baseyard; families welcome. Call Aaron Lowe at 973-9782.

WORM COMPOSTING — Learn the basics of vermicomposting at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 26 at Manoa Gardens Elderly Housing Community Center; $30 fee, includes minibin, starter colony and manual. Call 382-0432 or e-mail waikikiworm@hawaii.rr.com.

KANE'OHE WETLAND PROJECT — Volunteers are needed Feb. 9 to help the Sierra Club remove mangrove and other invasive species from wetlands on Marine Corps Base Hawai'i to create habitat for endangered waterbirds. Submit name and contact information by Feb. 7 to Annette Kaohelaulii at 235-5431.

THURSDAY WORKDAYS — Join the Nature Conservancy 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursdays at the Honouliuli Preserve in Kunia for volunteer work requiring hiking and moderately strenuous activity removing invasive species, clearing trails, monitoring and repairing fences. WEED & POT CLUB — Maui Nui Botanical Garden's Weed & Pot Club meets 8:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesdays at 150 Kanaloa Ave. in Kahului to weed, rake, trim or transplant nursery plants, and do other beautification and maintenance work. Tools, gloves and drinking water provided; bring sunscreen, wear shoes.
