Dollar falls against yen in European trading

LONDON (AP) — The U.S. dollar was mostly lower against other major currencies in European trading Tuesday. Gold rose.

The euro traded at $1.4849, down from $1.4877 late Monday in New York. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro fetched $1.4850.

Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Monday, included 106.76 Japanese yen, down from 108.28; 1.0897 Swiss francs, down from 1.0927; and 1.0172 Canadian dollars, down from 1.0183.

The British pound was quoted at $1.9725, up from $1.9567.

In midday New York trading, the dollar bought 107.10 yen and 1.0915 Swiss francs, while the pound was worth $1.9662.

Gold traded in London at $909.40 per troy ounce, up from $907.75 late Monday. In Zurich, gold traded at $908.10 bid per troy ounce, up from $907.20.

Silver traded in London at $16.37, down from $16.46.
