Islander's 'Street Wars' film to premiere on Mainland

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

"Street Wars,"a film directed, edited, written and produced in Hawaii by Island resident Nelson Pires, will receive its world premiere at 8 p.m. Jan. 23 in Westfield, Mass.

Set in Honolulu, the film — about a detective trying to quell gang violence and drug trafficking — stars Bruce Chu, Shimone Yuhudah and Brian Dinsmore and an Island cast. It contains adult language and nudity, with "an ending fight scene you will never forget," said Pires.

Pires is a 2003 alumnus of the theater arts program at Westfield and is a former resident of Springfield, Mass. He will attend the premiere and appear at Q&A session after the showing.

While in college, Pires was in an exchange program at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, where he learned theatrics and a range of entertainment styles, including break dancing, capoeira and hip-hop and other Asian art forms. He relocated here because of his university experience and is currently involved in a documentary project on women's health issues. He also would also like to help start a film industry in the Western Massachusetts.

He has appeared on ABC's "Lost" and had a part in "You, Me and Dupree," a film partly shot in the Islands, with Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson and Matt Dillon.
