The man, 38, was in cardiac arrest when transported in critical condition to Straub at about 7:30 a.m. following a confrontation with police, according to Honolulu Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.
He died at about 7 p.m.
The man, who stands 5-feet-8 and weighs close to 280 pounds, has a heart condition, and police recovered methamphetamine and a glass pipe in a search of the stolen rental car he was driving.
An autopsy tomorrow will try to determine cause and manner of death.
Police responded to the Tesoro location on a "suspicious circumstances" complaint regarding a man seated in a car near a gas pump.
The man appeared to be asleep in the driver's seat, police said.
Police ran a check and learned the vehicle was stolen.
The man was awakened and became agitated and combative toward officers at the scene, police said. A struggle ensued and officers were able to gain control and hand cuff the suspect, who lost consciousness.
The man has six prior criminal convictions.
