Honolulu Symphony offering free concerts on Maui

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Symphony this week is offering free education and community outreach events on Maui, including a full-orchestra concert set for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

Hawaiian music Grammy nominee Raiatea Helm will join the symphony — vocals and 'ukulele — in performance of Hawaiian-language songs.

Another concert highlight: Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 4 in E-flat Major featuring Wade Butin, the symphony's principal horn musician. Composed in 1786, the concerto is distinguished for its lyrical and expressive horn-writing.

Maestro Aaron Mahi will lead the orchestra. No tickets are required.

At a rehearsal, set for 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Baldwin High School Auditorium in Wailuku, musicians will discuss how they work together to prepare for a performance. The public is invited to the open rehearsal to experience the creative process as Mahi prepares the musicians for a performance of works by Copland, Mendelssohn, Mozart and Rimsky-Korsakov.

A question-answer discussion period will follow. Young musicians in grades seven to 12, and their families, are encouraged to participate.

In addition, two free education concerts, titled "The Color of Sound," will be performed at 9:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. (for grades five to eight). The concerts — at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center — will be conducted by Maestro Stuart Chafetz and hosted by symphony education director Jon Magnussen, and Hawaii Theatre education director Hester Kamin.
