Mother Marianne events to celebrate feast day

The Sisters of St. Francis will hold several statewide events to celebrate Mother Marianne's feast day as well as the order's 125th anniversary year, including special liturgies, an original mele, awards program, a mosaic blessing and presentations. Her feast day is observed Jan. 23, her birthday.

The blessed Mother Marianne, who came in 1883, spent 35 years in Hawaii caring for Hansen's disease patients in Honolulu and at Kalaupapa, as well as opening hospitals and schools. She and Father Damien are two people with Hawai'i ties who are in the process of being named saints by the Catholic church.

Public events in the next few months:

i Feast day celebration at Kalaupapa, 10:30 a.m. Saturday, St. Francis Church, Kalaupapa.

i Masses: On Maui: Jan. 23, Maria Lanakila Church and Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina. On the Big Island: 6 p.m. Jan. 27 at St. Joseph Parish in Hilo, followed by a reception; 808-935-4936, Ext. 223 or 226. On Oahu: 7 p.m. Jan. 23 at Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa with Bishop Larry Silva, deacons and priests (prelude will feature an original mele), followed by a catered dinner; 687-3420.
