The Tennessee Titans fired offensive coordinator Norm Chow today after a season of struggling to score points, even though they reached the playoffs for the first time since 2003.

Titans coach Jeff Fisher confirmed the dismissal in a short statement. Chow had been on staff for three years.

Chow, who is from Hawai'i, was mentioned as a possible candidate for the head coaching job at Hawai'i following the departure of June Jones to Southern Methodist.

Chow reportedly did not apply for the position, which most likely will go to UH defensive coordinator Greg McMackin.

Chow, who was previously the offensive coordinator at USC, was interviewed for UCLA's head coach opening in December but withdrew his name from consideration. The Bruins went on to hire Rick Neuheisel.

After his hiring, Neuheisel mentioned Chow as someone who could potentially join his staff.

Chow coached three Heisman Trophy winners during his career at BYU and USC in Ty Detmer (BYU), Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart.

He also coached current San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers while at North Carolina State.

The Titans finished the regular season 10-6 and suffered a 17-6 loss to the San Diego Chargers in the first round of the playoffs. They finished 10th in the AFC in total yards.

Fisher said the day after his Titans lost an AFC wild-card game to San Diego that improving the offense was his top priority this offseason.

The Titans ranked 21st overall in total yards and became the only team to reach the playoffs in a 16-game season while scoring only nine touchdowns passing.

After a week of evaluating the team, Fisher told Chow he would not be retained as offensive coordinator.

"I appreciate all of the hard work and contributions he made to the organization during his time here, but I have decided to go in a different direction and will start the process of finding a new offensive coordinator," Fisher said in the statement.

Fisher lured Chow from the same post at USC to the NFL in 2005.

Chow, 61, told The Tennessean he was disappointed and didn't see the firing coming. He said he thought he could help develop Vince Young, who threw nearly twice as many interceptions as touchdowns this season.

"Obviously, Jeff didn't think that I could. ... That's the thing. I don't know ... but it's going to take some patience," Chow told the newspaper.
