Commuter ferry sailing again

Advertiser Staff

Engine trouble that kept a city-sponsored commuter ferry docked for more than two weeks has been repaired, and the vessel resumed service yesterday.

Officials hope there will be no more problems with the Rachel Marie, one of two 72-foot catamarans that sail between Kalaeloa and Aloha Tower as part of a program dubbed TheBoat.

"The city is pleased to continue offering this important choice for commuters as an alternative to our clogged freeways as we seek to improve public transportation," said city spokesman Bill Brennan. "We are hopeful that both boats will continue operations with no further disruptions in service. And we thank commuters for their understanding and patience while the necessary repairs took place."

The rebuilt diesel engine that was experiencing problems had recently been installed to replace another engine that was badly damaged when a cooling system failed in November.

The city has considered replacing the Rachel Marie, but no comparable vessels are immediately available, and a new one would be too costly.

TheBoat is a one-year pilot project funded by $5 million in federal grants. The second ferry, the Melissa Ann, has had no significant problems since service was launched in September.
