Kirsty Adams helped the 'Iolani girls soccer team earn an important and rare win against Kamehameha.

The junior scored two goals in the Raiders' 3-0 win Friday against the defending state champions. The win also tightened the lead in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu standings with Kamehameha leading at 8-1 (24 points) and 'Iolani and Punahou tied at 7-1-1 (22 points).

"We felt like it was history because we haven't won (against Kamehameha) for awhile," Adams said. "Ever since I've been playing, we haven't won.

"We just felt that this is a different team. Every year we had good all-star players. This year, we didn't have a standout. We knew everyone would be one and we played as a team and came out strong."

Adams scored the game's first two goals in the 34th and 47th minutes. She credited the support of her teammates, fans and parents at Koizuki Stadium and coaches.

"The coaches, they always put pressure on all of us," Adams said. "I pulled myself out halfway through the game to talk to them. (Assistant) coach Jamie (Shoma) told me to get one. If we got one before halftime, we would be in a good shape."

Adams' first goal came off a cross from Krystal Pascua. She went behind a defender and shot from about 12 yards out.

"She's a very creative player," 'Iolani coach Chris Nied said. "She's got a knack for being in the right place at right time. She's got fantastic skills. Combine all those things and her playing from the middle of the field, it gives us a lot of strength."

The Raiders continued to press in the second half with Adams scoring on a penalty kick and Elissa Minamishin scoring in the 68th minute.

"That's what I told the girls at halftime, this is a position when we're leading that they hadn't been in for three, four years," Nied said. "The last thing is to go in scared and trying to protect the lead.

"The reason we have the lead is the way we played in the first half. We were determined to get the ball in the back of the net."

Adams missed the preseason with an injury and didn't return to the team until last month's loss at Kamehameha. She pushed through her rehab workouts "because I knew everyone was counting on us. We needed everyone."

"Kamehameha was my motivation, I had to be ready by then," said Adams, who came off the bench in that game.

"As soon as I went on the field, it felt good. I just picked it up from there."
