Diamond Head Theatre charting 'South Pacific Tour'

By Wayne Harada

Diamond Head Theatre is organizing a "South Pacific Tour" to New York to cheer on Loretta Ables Sayre, one of its popular actors in her Broadway theater debut this spring in Rodgers & Hammerstein's wartime musical.

The Diamond Head Theatre "South Pacific Tour" departs for New York on May 21 and returns May 27, 2008, including a May 25 visit to the show, a backstage tour and dinner with the Island singer-actress.

"We are so thrilled that Loretta, a DHT alum, has been cast in major role in a Broadway show," said DHT artistic director, John Rampage, who will serve as an escort — along with DHT executive director Deena Dray — for a six-day New York jaunt, which includes orchestra seats to see Ables Sayre as Bloody Mary at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theatre.

The musical premieres April 3.

"We felt that the community would relish an opportunity to be a part of this, so we quickly put together a show-stopping package," Rampage said.

"Holy moley," said Ables Sayre when she learned about the tour package. She starred in two productions of "You Somebody" at Diamond Head Theatre.

The group will stay at the Warwick Hotel and the 20-person limit will "keep it intimate and exclusive," Rampage said.
