Armed man prompts evacuation on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police evacuated some homes in the Kea'au Agricultural Lots subdivision this morning after officers answering a call about a domestic dispute saw a man with a rifle.

Police were called to the home on Ipuaiwaha Street at 7:55 a.m., and helped a 28-year-old woman leave the property. While they were there, officers saw a man with a rifle, and evacuated nearby homes as a precaution.

Police negotiated with the man, who surrendered without incident about an hour later.

Police arrested the 29-year-old man on suspicion of abuse of a family or household member, and he was being held at the Hilo police cellblock pending further investigation.
