Three well-known alumni join Honolulu Boy Choir

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

Three former Honolulu Boy Choir singers, who performed under the leadership of late founder Roy Hallman, have joined the boy choir organization as Blake M. Nuibe, the chairman and CEO, continues his rebuilding efforts.

"Step by step, we're getting there," said Nuibe, who has recruited a trio of former boy singers, now active in the music and education communities, to help in the reorganization:

i Kale Chang, new choral director. He was a member of the musical group Reign and he most recently has worked with singer Afatia Thompson. Chang was associated with the boy choir in 1998 and 1999 and has taught choral music at Saint Louis School, Kamehameha School and Anuenue Hawaiian immersion school. He presently is a musician, arranger and producer and owner of Soul Tree Studios, a recording company.

i Kaimi Pelekai, associate choral director. He previously served as associate boy choir choral director from 1999 to 2004, was choral director from 2004 to 2006 and presently is a Honolulu Fire Department firefighter.

i Jarett Souza, kumu hula. He is returning to a position he held from 1997 until 2001 and is working toward a master's in education at the University of Hawai'i while teaching Hawaiian language and hula at Kailua High School. Souza also operates Halau Hula 'O Kawaiho'omalu and performs with the trio Kamaehu.

The choir will participate in Monday's Martin Luther King Jr. parade from Ala Moana Beach Park through Waikiki.
