Hawaii Superferry cancels Maui voyage today

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii Superferry canceled its roundtrip voyage to Maui today due to large swells in Kahului Harbor.

The conditions forced the state Department of Transportation to move a barge used for loading and unloading vehicles from the high-speed interisland ferry from the end of Pier 2 to the ferry berth on a more protected side of the pier.

Company officials said they expect to resume service tomorrow.

Similar harbor surge conditions in early December caused damage to the pier and barge, and delayed the restart of Hawaii Superferry service by a week.

Rough conditions in the open ocean along the ferry route forced the 350-foot catamaran to cancel service four days in a row in late December.
