Two men accused of assaulting Honolulu police officers

Prosecutors today charged two men in connection with separate assaults on police officers.

Richard D. Matas, 33, of Pupukahi Street, Waipahu allegedly reversed his car, striking a solo bike officer Monday on the H-1 Freeway near the Kaonohi Street overpass in 'Aiea and drove off to flee from a traffic stop.

Matas was charged with first-degree assault on a police officer and first-degree criminal property damage. His bail is $100,000.

The solo bike officer, 42, was not seriously injured.

Meanwhile, Ross B. Chumley, 28, who lists no permanent local address, was charged with two counts of first-degree assault on police officers.

Chumley allegedly struck two officers who were preparing to cite him for sleeping on the sidewalk in Waikiki. Chumley's bail is $20,000.
