Preps: Obama visit helps Reno hoops team

Associated Press

RENO, Nev. — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama probably doesn't know it, but he's done a huge favor for the Bishop Manogue High School basketball team.

The fourth-ranked Miners were scheduled to play a road game Friday in Elko — a five hour drive — then host No. 3 Galena at home the next day.

Enter Obama, who plans to campaign in Elko on Friday and hold a rally at the high school gym that afternoon.

School officials say the logistics of moving crowds of people in and out in time for the prep game was too much.

So those games will be played Thursday, a day early, giving the Miners a day off in between.

Rich Stevens, Bishop Manogue coach, is thankful — but can't say whether the candidate's inadvertent intervention will parlay into a vote.
