Advertiser Staff

The Golden retriever has found its way to the American Kennel Club's Top 10 list of most popular AKC registered breeds in Honolulu in 2007.

The list of most popular registered breeds for Honolulu as well as nationally was released today. Nationally, the Labrador retriever is top dog, followed by the Yorkshire Terrier, German Shepherd, golden retriever, beagle, boxer, Daschund, poodle, Shih Tzu and bull dog.

Honolulu's Top 10:

1. Golden retriever

2. Labrador retriever

3. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

4. Dachshund

5. German Shepherd

6. Chihuahua

7. Pomeranian

8. Shetland Sheepdog

9. Beagles

10, Papillon

The rankings were compiled by registration data pulled from Honolulu ZIP codes as specified by U.S. Postal Services, the AKC said.

This is 17th consecutive year the Labrador retriever is still the most popular breed in the country.

The AKC said in a news release that golden retriever was ranked fourth in Honolulu in 2006.

It also said that Hawai'i residents placed the diminutive toy breeds — the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the Chihuahua, the Pomeranian and the Papillon — in the Top 10 yet the Yorkshire Terrier only reached 20th, a large contrast from its national ranking of 2nd place.

Some of the least common breeds in Honolulu include the Brittany, the Keeshond and the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier.
