Senate president calls for economic growth

Advertiser Staff

State Senate President Colleen Hanabusa has begun the Senate's session for 2008 calling for sustainable economic growth.

Hanabusa acknowledged former Gov. George Ariyoshi and spoke of Ariyoshi's vision 30 years ago and his call for Hawai'i's people to be "masters of our destiny."

Hanabusa said, "That is our challenge today."

She called the Hawaii Superferry a "lightning rod" and said some people fear what Hawai'i will look like in the future, whether it will be "locals versus new arrivals" or "urban versus agriculture."

Following the Superferry debate, Hawai'i then enjoyed the "shared experience" of University of Hawai'i football.

Hanabusa then introduced UH players seated in the Senate gallery wearing their team jerseys.

"We were again one community," Hanabusa said.
