Winter break was somewhat of a misnomer for Randall Tom.

The UC Irvine swimmer hardly took a break.

Tom, a junior from Wailuku, Maui, and 2004 graduate of Seabury Hall, did well enough at the USA Nationals in Atlanta to earn a spot on the prestigious U.S. team for April's FINA World Championships in Manchester, England.

Tom finished third in the 200-yard butterfly, eighth in the 100-yard butterfly, 17th in the 200-yard individual medley and 26th in the 50-yard freestyle at the nationals.

"There are only 12 males and 12 females selected to this team," said UC Irvine coach Brian Pajer. "This is his first international trip, his first time to Europe to swim, but he's improved a great deal and been able to handle each level as he's progressed."

Tom, who is redshirting for the Anteaters this season, will compete in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events.

Tom was a member of the Big West Conference championship teams in the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay last season. He also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard butterfly races, and third in the 200-yard individual medley. He was named All-Big West in six events.

"He's really got a lot of talent," said Pajer. "Randall's definitely come around. He's done a great job taking on the challenge."

UC Irvine senior Chelsea Nagata has also had a successful career. The 2004 graduate of Maui from Kahului finished eighth in the 100-yard butterfly at last year's NCAA Championships and earned All-America honors.

"Chelsea's a tremendous young lady. She's a hard worker, extremely talented and very passionate about her swimming," said Pajer. "She brings so much on so many different levels. She's really done a great job across the board here as a student-athlete."

Nagata also won the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke, and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team at last year's Big West Championships. She was named the Big West Athlete of the Year as a sophomore in 2005 and became the first female All-American in the program's history last season.

UC Irvine next competes in a tri-meet against Cal Baptist and San Diego on Jan. 26.
