Hawai'i Police Chief Lawrence K. Mahuna has promoted Maj. Henry Tavares to assistant chief, effective Jan. 16.

Until his promotion, Tavares was major in charge of the Technical Services Division in the Big Island Police Department's Administrative Bureau. He will now oversee police operations in West Hawai'i.

Tavares, a graduate of the FBI National Academy, joined the Hawai'i Police Department in 1984. His previous assignments include lieutenant in Vice and captain of Internal Affairs and the Criminal Intelligence Unit.

Mahuna transferred Assistant Chief Derek Pacheco from West Hawa'ii to East Hawai'i to fill a vacancy left when Assistant Chief James Day retired at the end of December. Pacheco is now in charge of East Hawai'i operations.
