New EPA hearing date on Sand Island wastewater plant

Advertiser Staff

HONOLULU – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced a change in the date to March 12 at 6:30 p.m. for a public hearing on the proposed decision not to renew the City and County of Honolulu's permit variance to exempt the Sand Island Wastewater Treatment plant from full secondary-treatment requirements.

City officials maintain it will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to upgrade the plant and that secondary treatment is not needed.

The EPA also extended the public comment period on its decision not to renew the exemption by 31 days at the request of the city. The comment period will now end on March 31.

The location for the hearing remains the same, Washington Middle School cafeteria, 1663 S. King St.
