American Samoa leader in guarded condition at Tripler

Associated Press

HONOLULU — American Samoa Gov. Togiola Tulafono is in guarded condition a day after he was evacuated to Hawai'i to be treated for complications from surgery to remove his appendix.

Tulafono's office, in a statement issued by Tripler Army Medical Center where he is being treated, says his condition has improved since he arrived.

Tulafono underwent a successful emergency appendectomy at LBJ Medical Center in Pago Pago on Jan. 5.

But he appeared to experience an allergic reaction afterward, prompting a second surgery nine days later.

He had to evacuated to Hawai'i when doctors determined some problems hadn't been solved, potentially threatening the governor's life.

An Air Force C-17 cargo jet brought the governor, his wife, and his two daughters to Hawai'i.
