Volleyball: Stanford star is sport's Honda winner

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Stanford's Foluke Akinradewo is the Honda Sports Award winner for volleyball.

Akinradewo led Stanford to its second straight NCAA title match in 2007 and second consecutive Pac-10 Championship. The Cardinal lost to Penn State 3-2 at the NCAA final last month.

Akinradewo led the nation in 2007 with a .499 hitting percentage, the second-best single-season mark in NCAA history. The AVCA National and Pac-10 Player of the Year, she earned a career-best 26 kills in the NCAA semifinal win.

The junior from Plantation, Fla., is training with the U.S. national team.

She is automatically nominated for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Award, which will be announced in June.
