Keali'i Reichel composer to discuss translation project

Puakea Nogelmeier, an assistant professor of Hawaiian language at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa and widely known as a Hawaiiana scholar and music composer for Keali'i Reichel, will discuss his recent translation project in a free session from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani Performing Arts Center's Choral Room.Nogelmeier's recently completed Ho'olaupa'i Hawaiian Newspapers Project has resulted in the release of "Hi'iakaikapoliopele," a twin-volume publication and translation of Ho'oulumahiehie's 1906 newspaper serial focusing on the exploits of Pele's youngest and favorite sister.
He will discuss the project then sign books from 8:30 to 9 p.m. Single volume cost is $40; the two-volume set is $80. Credit cards will not be accepted.
Kamehameha Schools is presented the event, with part of the proceeds going to support the graduation program of Ke Kula 'O Samuel Kamakau Hawaiian Language Immersion Laboratory Public Charter School.
