Mililani to face Pearl City for OIA Red soccer title

By Kyle Sakamoto

The Mililani girls soccer team squeezed so much excitement out of a victory over Kalani last night, it should be known as a bunch of drama queens.

The Trojans got a last-second goal at the end of regulation to tie the match and won a penalty-kick shootout 4-3 to pull out a 2-1 victory in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Girls Red Conference semifinals at Kailua.

West runner-up Mililani will play West champion Pearl City for the title tomorrow at 6:15 p.m. at Kapolei. Pearl City beat Kaiser, 1-0, in the earlier semifinal behind a penalty kick by Meghan Fuller.

Mililani looked doomed against Kalani, trailing 1-0 in the final minute of regulation.

But Sasha Moscatello chased down a loose ball on the right end line and sent a cross to Breeanna Locquiao, who tied the match with a leaping header with 20 seconds left.

The teams went through two 10-minute overtime periods before it went to a shootout.

Mililani's Mari Miyashiro (first shooter), Chelsea Miyake (second) and Chelsey Goo (fifth) made their penalty kicks. Kristin Sagami (seventh) won it with a shot to the top right corner of the goal.

"I was super nervous," Sagami said. "I was hoping that the people in front of me would put it in, just like practice."

Kalani's Ayana Powell (first), Kyla Tamayori (second) and Andrea Aguirre (fourth) made their penalty shots. The Falcons had a chance to win but the fifth shooter sent her shot over the cross bar.

Goo's kick sent the shootout to the next round.

Joleen Realin was in goal for Mililani. She blocked two shots in the shootout. Another shot went off the left post.

"Basically what goes on in my mind is just concentrating on their hips, being in my zone, not letting them get into my head and just focusing on them," she said.

Last season, the Trojans lost in the OIA and state tournaments on penalty kicks.

"We started practicing (penalty kicks) from day one of our season because I refused to let that be a factor again for this team," said Mililani coach Ray Akiona.

Kalani scored at 68:20 on a goal by Tani Costa, who controlled a throw-in in front of the goal, held off two defenders, touched the ball to the right and shot it into the net.

The Pearl City-Kaiser match was supposed to start at 5:15 p.m., but was delayed about 30 minutes because the Cougars got caught in traffic after the temporary closure of the H-1 Freeway.

The only goal came at 14:30 on a penalty kick by Fuller, who shot the ball to the right of the Kaiser goalie.

"I was trying not to let the pressure get to my head," Fuller said. "I was just trying to focus on placing the ball where I wanted it to go."

The penalty kick was set up after Kaitlyn Holt was tripped at the right edge of the penalty box by a Kaiser defender.

At first, Fuller didn't want to take the penalty kick, but Pearl City co-head coach Frank Baumholtz II sent her to the spot.

"Meghan was pretty cool," Baumholtz said. "Actually she thought the girl that got fouled should take the kick. I said no; I wanted her to take it, and she buried it."

He added in big games you "go with your best first."
