Preps: Lahainaluna rallies past KS-Maui, 54-53

By Robert Collias
The Maui News

LAHAINA — John Craig hadn't played much in the Lahainaluna High School boys basketball team's run to six wins in its first seven Maui Interscholastic League games.

He played enough last night to ensure the Lunas would get to 7-1.

Craig scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter — and had a pair of gargantuan steals in the final minute and a half, plus two athletic blocks in the last 30 seconds — to lead the Lunas to a come-from-behind 54-53 win over Kamehameha Maui.

The defending champion Warriors fell to 6-2 in front of a capacity crowd in the Lunas' tiny gym. Both teams are receiving votes in the Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of media and coaches.

Lahainaluna finished the game on an 8-2 run, and it was Craig's bank shot with 1:25 left to play that gave the Lunas their first lead, 52-51, since the first quarter.

The victory put Lahainaluna a game ahead in the MIL Division I standings with four games to play in the regular season, which will decide one of the league's two state-tournament berths.

"It is all from the guys, we want to win, we want to be first place, we want to go to states this year,'' Craig, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound junior forward who has been slowed by a pair of ankle sprains for the last three weeks, said to The Maui News. "It was all the seniors — they want us to win and they gave us the motivation to push even harder. I was a little bit worried when we were down five there late, but the seniors pushed us to this win.''

Lahainaluna trailed by 16 before Paul Salvador's two free throws with two seconds left before halftime made the score 29-15.

The Lunas were within five at the end of the third quarter, but they were still down 51-46 with 2:17 to play when Kamehameha's Erwin DeCoite scored on a fast break after a nifty pass from Kaleo DeMello.

Lahainaluna's Dillon Soldwisch, who had all nine of his points in the second half, made a free throw to cut the deficit to four with 1:59 left. After Soldwisch grabbed the rebound of his miss on his second attempt, he found Salvador open in the corner for a 3-pointer that splashed through with 1:41 to go.

Then Craig went to work.

His short banker gave the Lunas the lead, and he then stole an outlet pass and went the distance for a layup with 1:12 left to cap an 8-0 run.

Jeffrey Oka drove the lane and his scoop shot brought the Warriors within one with 48 seconds left.

The Lunas' Nuti Pousima missed the first free throw in a bonus situation, and the Warriors hurried the ball down the floor after the rebound.

Bryan Pali looked like he was sailing in for the go-ahead layup when Craig swooped in and blocked the shot against the backboard with 25 seconds to go.

Salvador, who finished with a game-high 16 points, missed the front end of another 1-and-1, however, and the Warriors set up a final play after a pass was swatted out of bounds in their front court with 15 seconds left.

That is when Craig came up big one last time. He blocked Oka's drive into the middle with eight seconds to go and Salvador dribbled out the final seconds.

When the horn went off the jubilant crowd stormed the court.

"I don't think I have ever had a bigger block than that last one,'' said Craig, who moved to Lahaina from Texas when he was 13. "We struggled in the first half, but I think we just have to get used to this many people watching us play. It was loud in here tonight — the crowd was a big help.''

The Lunas shot 5-for-35 from the field in the first half, but made 18 of 31 shots in the second half.

Kamehameha was 22-for-36 from the field, but had 28 turnovers, including 17 in the second half.

Lahainaluna coach Eric Balinbin said he wasn't concerned when his team trailed late.

"No, because we cover that situation in practice,'' he said. "We talked to the kids and said, 'All we've got to do is make a couple shots, get a couple stops, score off those stops, and we will be in good shape.' At the end, John Craig came through with some wonderful defense – making the block on the board, and getting the rebound. It was good timing. He really came out. We couldn't have asked for more from the young man. In the preseason he played a lot for us, but he had a couple of (ankle) twists that have limited his playing time lately.''

Kamehameha coach Lance Cagasan applauded the raucous crowd.

"That was a tough game, a good game, a great atmosphere to play in,'' Cagasan said. "I hope when they come to our place it will be like this. I wish all gyms were like Lahaina. That was great spirit. If we could get that going in all the gyms, that is what MIL basketball should all be about.''

Cagasan also had to tip his cap to Craig.

"John Craig was big, he was big,'' Cagasan said. "We let him catch and that is not something we usually do. We were a little flat-footed out there at the end. I take fault in that because I burned my timeouts too early so we couldn't call one to get a last-second shot, but we had a 14-point lead and for some reason we stopped playing. We forgot what got us there — we played to protect the lead — but we will be back.''
