Damien Memorial's record-setting running back Kama Bailey has been invited to walk on to the University of Hawai'i football team, according to a Damien spokesman.

Bailey, who set an Interscholastic League of Honolulu single-game rushing record with 370 yards Nov. 3 against Pac-Five, finished the season with 2,045 yards and 21 rushing touchdowns.

The Advertiser all-state selection is on a recruiting trip to Idaho this weekend, went to Idaho State last weekend and is scheduled to visit Navy next week, the spokesman said. Bailey was the ILH Offensive Co-Player of the Year.

While it seems surprising that UH has not offered a scholarship, it might be because of the Warriors' intent on recruiting a bruising fullback for the run-and-shoot offense with new offensive coordinator Ron Lee at the helm. At 5-feet-8 and 175 pounds, Bailey might be projected as a slotback. Bailey had six receptions for 94 yards this past season.

NCAA rules prohibit UH from commenting on prospective recruits.

Meanwhile, Leilehua all-state linebacker Art Laurel (6-1, 210) will visit UH next weekend, Mules coach Nolan Tokuda said. Tokuda added that Idaho, Idaho State and Washington also are showing interest.

Laurel's teammate, linebacker Robert Siavii, The Advertiser's Defensive Player of the Year, also is visiting Idaho this weekend.

There are only two more weekends for Division I programs to host recruits. The first day binding national letters of intent may be signed is Feb. 6
