Maui police have identified the motorcyclist killed yesterday morning in Ma'alaea as Army Sgt. Eric Rynearson, 22.

Rynearson was thrown from his 2007 Suzuki GSXR on Ma'alaea Road, two-tenths of a mile north of Kapoli Street, after losing control of the motorcycle, which went off the roadway and crashed into a guardrail. Police were called at 12:30 a.m.

Rynearson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Rynearson was assigned to a recruiting office in Wailuku. His immediate family lives in Oregon, according to police.

The traffic fatality is Maui's first in 2008.
