Public asked to cooperate in visiting H-1 memorial

Advertiser Staff

State Department of Transportation officials are asking that people leaving items at the memorial for Cyrus Belt at the Miller Street overpass on the H-1 Freeway leave the items at the mauka end of the overpass, not in the center of the walkway.

DOT spokesman Scott Ishikawa said today that the large number of toys, flowers and other items were a distraction to motorists and some of the items had fallen onto the freeway, posing a hazard to traffic.

Ishikawa said people are welcome to come to the overpass and leave remembrances but should leave the items at the mauka end of the overpass.

Belt, who would have turned 2 years old next month, was thrown to his death from the overpass on Thursday. Police have charged Matthew Higa, 23, with murder in the case.
