Man charged in Chinatown assault on police officers

Advertiser Staff

A Nu'uanu man was charged today for allegedly assaulting two police officers in Chinatown last night while resisting arrest for drinking alcohol in public.

Christopher Young, 36, was arrested fronting 1161 Maunakea St. at 6:30 p.m. after he allegedly bit one officer on the left arm and caused undisclosed injuries to a second officer. Both male officers, ages 27 and 26, were treated for injuries and released.

Third-degree promotion of dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia counts were added to first- and second-degree assault on a police officer counts when evidence of drugs were allegedly found on the suspect at booking.

Young's bail is $20,000.

The police officers who were injured had approached the suspect on a complaint from a motorist who nearly struck him while he was allegedly jaywalking. The pedestrian allegedly flicked a lit cigarette into the complainant's vehicle while walking away, police said.
