Stevenson moves on at Waikoloa

The Hilton Waikoloa Village Challengers opened yesterday on the Big Island with a name from the past winning her opening round of qualifying.

Alexandra Stevenson, who in 1999 became the first woman qualifier in the Open Era to reach the Wimbledon semifinals, defeated Slovakia's Lubomira Kurhajcova, 6-0, 6-4, in one of the five women's qualifiers at Kohala Tennis Garden.

Stevenson, 27, is ranked 399th in the world after suffering shoulder problems the past few years. Her career-high ranking, of 18, came in 2002. She is the daughter of former NBA star Julius Erving.

In the other qualifiers yesterday, American Robin Stephenson advanced, along with Slovakia's Kristina Kucova, Finland's Piia Suomalainen and Canada's Valerie Tetreault.

LAM WINS TWO

Fresh off his doubles championship Friday in Miami Beach, Hawai'i's Chris Lam won the first two rounds of singles qualifying at Boca Raton, Fla., yesterday in the $10,000 Champion Porsche Futures.

Lam, seeded fourth in qualifying, defeated Kristopher Elie, 6-2, 6-1, and then dispatched Nathan Pasha, 6-3, 6-4.

Lam faces American Joseph Cadogan in today's semifinals.

ST. MARY'S BEATS UH

St. Mary's defeated short-handed Hawai'i, 4-3, yesterday in a collegiate match at the UH Tennis Complex.

Sascha Heinemann, Andreas Weber and Jeff Fitch won singles matches for the the Rainbow Warriors (0-3), who had just five players and forfeited one singles and one doubles match. Fitch and Spence Mendoza won their doubles match.

DIVING



UH WOMEN SWEEP

Emma Friesen led a Hawai'i sweep of the 1-meter diving event yesterday at the Rainbow Diving Invitational at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Stephanie De Lima placed second and Raquel Bartlow third.

UCLA All-American Tess Schofield won the platform event.

UH's Magnus Frick won the 1-meter men's event with teammate Mats Wiktorsson second.
