Skiing: U.S. women dominate World Cup at Cortina

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy — The U.S. Ski Team's 1-2 punch of Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso dominated the premiere stop on the women's World Cup tour for the third straight season.

The Americans were awarded the Cortina Super Ski Trophy following Vonn's downhill victory Saturday and Mancuso's runner-up finish in Sunday's super-G.

"Americans are totally dominating Cortina," Vonn said Monday. "It's pretty sweet to see."

The winner of the trophy is determined by the results of each team's top finisher in the two races.

Vonn posted the first podium finish of her career in Cortina four years ago and Mancuso has finished in the top three six times over the past three seasons.

"We like Cortina," Mancuso said. "It's always fun to come here. The beautiful scenery inspires people to do beautiful things."

Site of the 1956 Winter Olympics and blessed by sunshine more often than not, Cortina is surrounded by jagged mountain peaks that have earned it the nickname "Queen of the Italian Dolomite range."

The resort is bidding to host the Alpine Skiing World Championships in 2013. The vote is slated for May and Vail-Beaver Creek in Colorado is also a candidate, but the Americans may be rooting for Cortina.

"Cortina is special to me. I got my first podium here and before that I wasn't sure I would ever achieve all the goals I set out for myself as a child," Vonn said. "The course is always challenging."

Vonn's good friend Maria Riesch won Monday's super-G, but that race did not count toward the team award because it was originally scheduled for Aspen, Colo., last month.

Vonn finished fourth Monday, missing the podium by one-hundredth of a second, and Mancuso was sixth.

The U.S. team received a large trophy in the shape of Cortina's belltower.

"I'm so psyched about it," Vonn said. "I think we have a really strong team. I've been saying that for a couple of years now.

"We've got a couple of young girls that are really coming on strong — Leanne Smith and Megan McJames — and Stacey (Cook) got two good results Sunday and today (13th and 14th), and Julia obviously is skiing awesome," Vonn added. "It's cool to get team trophies. Cortina is the only World Cup race they do it at, so it's really special."
