CBKB: Va. Tech player apologizes for bumping referee

Associated Press

BLACKSBURG, Va. — A Virginia Tech basketball player suspended by the Atlantic Coast Conference for bumping a referee has apologized.

The ACC suspended freshman forward Jeff Allen for two games Sunday for making inappropriate contact with an official during the Hokies' game at Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Allen, who fouled out with 4:32 to play, was on his way to the bench when he bumped or elbowed official Zelton Steed, who ejected him.

In a statement released Monday by Virginia Tech, Allen apologized, saying he made "a terrible mistake" and let his emotions get the best of him.

Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg also apologized to Steed in a statement.

Allen will miss the home game against Duke on Thursday and Saturday's game at Boston College.
