Maui primed for its February Whale Festival events

The Great Maui Whale Festival will be Feb. 9-24 on Maui.

Organized by the nonprofit Pacific Whale Foundation, events include a fun run; an all-day festival featuring a free concert; a talk and slideshow; a whalewatch cruises and a citizen's count of whales that can be viewed from Maui's shores:

-- Feb. 9: Run for the Whales along the scenic South Maui coast in Makena and Wailea; Pacific Whale Foundation at 808-249-8811.

-- Feb. 16: Parade of Whales, 9 a.m. on South Kihei Road, beginning at the Kihei Public Library. Followed by the Whale Day Celebration, a free, all-day celebration of humpback whales from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kalama Park (by the big whale statue) on South Kihei Road. With performances by John Cruz, Barefoot Natives, George Kahumoku Jr., Henry Kapono, Jasmine Trias, Vince Esquire and Marty Dread, plus special guest DJ Augie T. Also: the Keiki Whale-a-thon from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; The Wild & Wonderful Whale Regatta from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; craft fair and food booths; children's carnival, silent auction and displays. -- Feb. 21: Free talk and slideshow with Greg Kaufman, 6 p.m. at Pacific Whale Foundation's Discovery Center, downstairs at The Harbor Shops at Ma'alaea; 808-249-8811.
