MAKAKILO
Rock quarry expansion plan to be discussed

Advertiser Staff

A plan by Grace Pacific Corp. to expand the Makakilo rock quarry is on the agenda of Wednesday's Makakilo/Kapolei/Honokai Hale Neighborhood Board meeting.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Kapolei High School cafeteria.

Grace Pacific wants to extend the life of the quarry, which is mauka of H-1 Freeway, for about 25 years. It also wants to expand uphill the size of the active quarry from its existing 72 acres to about 106 acres. It also proposes to increase the buffer zone from 178 acres to 393 acres, including 11 acres of landscaped buffer on one side of the quarry and a screening berm on the other.

The neighborhood board voted 6-1 in September 2006 to support the expansion.

But the Villages of Kapolei Association, as well as individual area residents, have expressed concerns about the expansion.

The city Planning Commission is expected to hold a public hearing on the proposal on Feb. 13.

Also on Wednesday's neighborhood board agenda is "Everything As We Know It Will Change," a slide lecture by University of Hawai'i professor Ira Rohter, author of "A Green Hawai'i."
