NFL: Chargers fire Hall of Famer Lofton as WR coach

Associated Press

SAN DIEGO — Hall of Famer James Lofton was fired as wide receivers coach today by the San Diego Chargers, who also released running backs coach Matt Simon.

The moves came two days after the Chargers lost to the perfect New England Patriots in the AFC championship game.

Lofton had been wide receivers coach since 2002. Simon had just finished his first season with the Chargers.

Neither Lofton nor coach Norv Turner could immediately be reached for comment.

"We appreciate the contributions that James made over the past six seasons and Matt's help in 2007," Turner said in a statement released by the team.
