New Mexico man charged in Kauai pedestrian death

Advertiser Staff

A New Mexico man was charged yesterday on Kaua'i with third-degree negligent homicide in connection with Thursday's fatal pedestrian accident in Kalaheo.

George Hostetter, 53, was released after posting $100 bail. He has a March 5 court appearance scheduled on Kaua'i.

Juan Lorenzo Sr., 81, of Kalaheo was struck while in a crosswalk by a vehicle driven by Hostetter at 7:05 a.m., police said.

Lorenzo died Saturday at The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu. The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office today listed cause and manner of death as blunt force injury to the torso from an accidental motor vehicle collision.

Lorenzo's death is Kaua'i's first traffic fatality of 2008.
