Police awaiting drug test result on accused murderer

Advertiser Staff

Police are awaiting lab results to verify suspected crystal methamphetamine use by accused murderer Matthew M. Higa, who made his initial appearance today at District Court.

Prosecutors and police declined comment today when asked about suspected drug use by Higa on Thursday when he allegedly tossed 23-month-old Cyrus Nainoa Tupa'i Belt over the Miller Street overpass onto the H-1 Freeway.

Higa is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

A preliminary hearing for Higa's warrantless arrest is scheduled this Thursday at District Court, which could be canceled if he is indicted by an O'ahu grand jury.
